ABSTRACT

Control of the Chagas disease vector, Triatoma infestans (Klug) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) with synthetic pesticides in Bolivia has become increasingly inefficient due to the development of resistance in the insects. In the Chaco region of Bolivia, guaraní populations have approached the problem by fumigating their houses with the smoke of native plants. Through interviews and field work with local guides, the main plant used by the guaraníes was collected and later identified as Capsicum baccatumL. var. baccatum (Solanaceae). In choice bioassays, filter papers exposed to the smoke of the plant repelled nymphs of T. infestans. Activity remained significant after storing the exposed filter papers for 9 days. Chemical analysis of smoke and literature data suggested that capsaicinoids present in the smoke were responsible for the repellent effect. The data presented provide a rationale for the use of C. baccatumvar. baccatumto control the Chagas vector bythe guaraní populations.


El control del vector de la enfermedad de Chagas, Triatoma infestans (Klug) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) con plaguicidas sintéticos en Bolivia se ha vuelto cada vez más ineficiente debido al desarrollo de resistencias en los insectos. En la región del Chaco de Bolivia, las poblaciones guaraníes han abordado el problema fumigando sus casas con el humo de las plantas nativas. A través de entrevistas y trabajo de campo con guías locales, se recogió la principal planta utilizada por los guaraníes y posteriormente se identificó como Capsicum baccatumL. var. baccatum (Solanaceae). En bioensayos selectos, los papeles de filtro expuestos al humo de la planta repelieron a las ninfas de T. infestans. La actividad siguió siendo significativa después de almacenar los papeles de filtro expuestos durante 9 días. El análisis químico del humo y los datos de la literatura sugieren que los capsaicinoides presentes en el humo eran responsables del efecto repelente. Los datos presentados proporcionan una justificación para el uso de C. baccatum var. baccatum para el control del vector Chagas por las poblaciones guaraníes.

ABSTRACT

The paper gives a consideration on the development of the national standard, Pure Moxa Stick. It is proposed that the principle and requirements for the development of product standard should be adhered to, while focusing on the applicability and safety of pure moxa stick. In terms of quality, the specific requirements should be developed on the ratio of moxa floss, wrapping paper and adhesives. Regarding the specifications, either the market demands or the resource waste prevention should be considered. In safety, the combustion temperature and moxa smoke control are the key issues.

ABSTRACT

In view of the limitations of the existing moxibustion instruments, i.e. possible accidental injury when using moxibustion instruments, the negative effects of products from moxibustion instruments on treatment efficacy and health of medical staff and patients, a moxibustion instrument with multi-jointed manipulator is designed. This moxibustion instrument could accurately control the temperature, maintain a safe moxibustion distance, automatically process the burning ashes of moxa and selectively handle moxa smoke. The experimental results shows that this instrument could maintain the constant temperature of target acupoint, reduce the risk of empyrosis, and reasonably deal with the products of moxibustion. The purification rate of moxa smoke is 44.9%, which not only ensures the therapeutic effect of moxa smoke, but also reduces the negative effects of high-concentration moxa smoke on the health of medical staff and patients.

BACKGROUND@#In recent years, heated tobacco products (HTPs), which are widely used in Japan, have been sold by various brands using additives such as flavors. It has been reported that the components of mainstream smoke are different from those of conventional cigarettes. In this study, we established an analytical method for furans and pyridines in the mainstream smoke, which are characteristic of HTPs and particularly harmful among the generated components, and investigated the amount of component to which the smokers are exposed.@*METHODS@#We established a simple analytical method for simultaneous analysis of gaseous and particulate compounds in the mainstream smoke of HTPs (IQOS, glo, ploom S) in Japan by combining a sorbent cartridge and glass fiber filter (Cambridge filter pad (CFP)). Both the sorbent cartridge and CFP were extracted using 2-propanol and analyzed via GC-MS/MS to determine the concentration of furans and pyridines generated from each HTP.@*RESULTS@#The results showed that the levels of target furans such as furfural, 2-furanmethanol, 2(5H)-furanone, and 5-methylfurfural tended to be higher in the mainstream smoke of glo than in standard cigarettes (3R4F). Pyridine, which is generated at a high level in 3R4F as a combustion component, and 4-ethenylpyridine (EP), which is a known marker of environmental tobacco smoke, were detected. Among these components, 2-furanmethanol and pyridine are classified as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Therefore, it is possible that they will contribute to the health effects caused by use of HTPs.@*CONCLUSIONS@#Using the new collection and analytical method for furans and pyridines in the mainstream smoke of HTPs, the level of each compound to which smokers are exposed could be clarified. By comprehensively combining information on the amount of ingredients and toxicity, it will be possible to perform a more detailed calculation of the health risks of using HTPs. In addition, the components detected in this study may be the causative substances of indoor pollution through exhaled smoke and sidestream smoke; therefore, environmental research on the chemicals generated from HTPs would be warranted in future studies.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT A simple and sensitive method for simultaneous determination of furan and vinyl acetate (VA) in vapor phase of mainstream cigarette smoke with cold trap and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed. A Cambridge filter pad (CFP) was placed in front of the impingers of smoking machine to remove the particle phase from cigarette smoke. Furan and VA in vapor phase of mainstream cigarette smoke were collected in two impingers connected in series by filled with methanol at -78°C. The solutions were added with deuterium-labeled furan-d4 and VA-d6 as internal standards and analyzed by GC-MS. The results showed that the calibration curves for furan and VA were linear (r2 > 0.9995) over the studied concentration range. The intra- and inter-day precision values for furan and VA were <7.07% and <9.62%, respectively. The extraction recoveries of furan and VA were in the range of 94.5-97.7% and 92.3-94.9%, respectively. Moreover, the limits of detection for furan and VA were 0.028 µg mL-1 and 1.3 ng mL-1, respectively. The validated method has been successfully applied to determine the emissions of furan and VA in the vapor phase of mainstream cigarette smoke under International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Canadian Intense (CI) smoking regimen.

Resumo: A produção de cigarros envolve uma série de substâncias e materiais além do próprio tabaco, do papel e do filtro. Os aditivos do tabaco incluem conservantes, flavorizantes, intensificadores, umectantes, açúcares e compostos de amônio. Embora as empresas produtoras de tabaco aleguem que os aditivos não aumentam a toxicidade da fumaça e não tornam os cigarros mais atraentes ou viciantes, tais alegações são contestadas por pesquisadores independentes. Os autores realizaram uma revisão dos estudos sobre os efeitos dos aditivos sobre a composição química e toxicidade da fumaça. Os aditivos elevam os níveis de formaldeído e causam pequenas alterações nos níveis de outros analitos medidos na fumaça. Estudos toxicológicos (testes de mutagenicidade e de citotoxicidade em células de mamíferos, estudos da exposição por 90 dias por via inalatória em ratos e ensaios do micronúcleo em células da medula óssea) indicaram que os aditivos do tabaco não aumentam a toxicidade da fumaça. Entretanto, é conhecido que os estudos em roedores falham em predizer o potencial carcinogênico da fumaça do cigarro, e os testes realizados tiveram poder estatístico insuficiente para detectar diferenças pequenas, porém relevantes do ponto de vista toxicológico, entre cigarros experimentais (com aditivos) e controles (sem aditivos). Em conclusão, esta revisão da literatura mostrou que o impacto dos aditivos na toxicidade da fumaça do tabaco ainda permanece por ser esclarecido.


Resumen: La producción de cigarrillos involucra un número de sustancias y materiales diferentes al tabaco en sí, papel y filtro. Los aditivos del tabaco incluyen aromas artificiales, potenciadores del sabor, humectantes, azúcares, y compuestos de amonio. A pesar de que las compañías sostienen que los aditivos del tabaco no aumentan la toxicidad del humo y no hacen los cigarrillos más atractivos y adictivos, estas afirmaciones son cuestionadas por investigadores independientes. Este trabajo ha revisado los estudios sobre los efectos de los aditivos del tabaco en la química del humo y su toxicidad. Los aditivos del tabaco conllevan niveles más altos de formaldehído y otros cambios menores en los análisis realizados del humo. Estudios toxicológicos (tests de mutagenicidad en bacterias y citotoxicidad en mamíferos, ensayos de inhalación en ratas 90 días y células del micronúcleo de la médula ósea) mostraron que los aditivos del tabaco no aumentaron la toxicidad del humo. Los ensayos de roedores, sin embargo, no predijeron adecuadamente la carcinogenicidad del humo del tabaco, y no eran claramente suficientes para dar a conocer, sin embargo, las pequeñas, pero toxicológicamente relevantes, diferencias entre el test (con/aditivos del tabaco) y control (sin/aditivos del tabaco) en cigarrillos. Esta revisión de la literatura nos lleva a la conclusión de que el impacto dañino de los aditivos del tabaco en el humo continúa estando poco claro.


Abstract: Cigarette production involves a number of substances and materials other than just tobacco, paper and a filter. Tobacco additives include flavorings, enhancers, humectants, sugars, and ammonium compounds. Although companies maintain that tobacco additives do not enhance smoke toxicity and do not make cigarettes more attractive or addictive, these claims are questioned by independent researchers. This study reviewed the studies on the effects of tobacco additives on smoke chemistry and toxicity. Tobacco additives lead to higher levels of formaldehyde and minor changes in other smoke analytes. Toxicological studies (bacterial mutagenicity and mammalian cytoxicity tests, rat 90 days inhalation studies and bone-marrow cell micronucleus assays) found that tobacco additives did not enhance smoke toxicity. Rodent assays, however, poorly predicted carcinogenicity of tobacco smoke, and were clearly underpowered to disclose small albeit toxicologically relevant differences between test (with tobacco additives) and control (without tobacco additives) cigarettes. This literature review led to the conclusion that the impact of tobacco additives on tobacco smoke harmfulness remains unclear.

ABSTRACT Objective: analyze the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in electrocautery smoke in operating rooms and the use of personal protective equipment by the intraoperative team when exposed to hydrocarbons. Method: exploratory and cross-sectional field research conducted in a surgery center. Gases were collected by a vacuum suction pump from a sample of 50 abdominal surgeries in which an electrocautery was used. A form was applied to identify the use of personal protective equipment. Gases were analyzed using chromatography. Descriptive statistics and Spearman's test were used to treat data. Results: there were 17 (34%) cholecystectomies with an average duration of 136 minutes, while the average time of electrocautery usage was 3.6 minutes. Airborne hydrocarbons were detected in operating rooms in 100% of the surgeries. Naphthalene was detected in 48 (96.0%) surgeries and phenanthrene in 49 (98.0%). The average concentration of these compounds was 0.0061 mg/m3 and a strong correlation (0.761) was found between them. The intraoperative teams did not use respirator masks such as the N95. Conclusion: electrocautery smoke produces gases that are harmful to the health of the intraoperative team, which is a concern considering the low adherence to the use of personal protective equipment.


RESUMEN Objetivo: analizar las concentraciones de hidrocarburos policíclicos aromáticos provenientes del humo del electrocauterio en salas quirúrgicas y el uso de equipamientos de protección individual por parte del equipo intraoperatorio, cuando expuestos a los hidrocarburos. Método: investigación de campo, exploratoria y transversal realizada en un centro quirúrgico. En la muestra, compuesta por 50 cirugías abdominales con uso de electrocauterio, los gases fueron recolectados con una bomba de succión de vacío. Se aplicó un formulario para identificar el uso de los equipamientos de protección. Se realizó la lectura de los gases por medio de cromatografía. Los datos fueron analizados con la estadística descriptiva y el test de Spearman. Resultados: 17 (34%) fueron colecistectomías con tiempo medio quirúrgico de 136 minutos y tiempo medio de uso del electrocauterio de 3,6 minutos. Fueron detectados hidrocarburos en el aire de las salas de operación en 100% de las cirugías. Se detectó el naftaleno en 48 (96,0%) cirugías y el fenantreno en 49 (98,0%). Las concentraciones promedio de esos compuestos fueron de 0,0061 mg/m3. Hubo correlación (0,761) fuerte entre estos compuestos. El equipo intraoperatorio no utilizó máscaras respiratorias, como la N95. Conclusión: el humo del electrocauterio produce gases perjudiciales para la salud del equipo intraoperatorio que se encuentra expuesto debido a la baja adhesión al uso de equipamientos de protección individual, tornando preocupante esta exposición.

Método: pesquisa de campo, exploratória e transversal realizada em um centro cirúrgico. Na amostra composta por 50 cirurgias abdominais com uso de eletrocautério, os gases foram coletados por bomba de sucção a vácuo. Um formulário foi aplicado para identificar o uso dos equipamentos de proteção. Realizou-se a leitura dos gases por cromatografia. Os dados foram analisados por estatística descritiva e teste de Spearman. Resultados: 17 (34%) foram as colecistectomias com tempo médio cirúrgico de 136 minutos e tempo médio de uso do eletrocautério de 3,6 minutos. Hidrocarbonetos foram detectados no ar das salas operatórias em 100% dos atos cirúrgicos. Detectou-se o naftaleno em 48 (96,0%) cirurgias e o fenantreno em 49 (98,0%). As concentrações médias desses compostos foram de 0,0061 mg/m3. Houve correlação (0,761) forte entre estes compostos. A equipe intraoperatória não utilizou máscaras respiratórias, como a N95. Conclusão: a fumaça do eletrocautério produz gases prejudiciais à saúde da equipe intraoperatória exposta e diante da baixa adesão ao uso de equipamentos de proteção individual, tornando-se preocupante esta exposição.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the chemical components of the smoke from electrocautery from coagulating muscle and liver tissues of pigs. Methods: we collected smoke produced by electrocautery applied to porcine tissue in previously evacuated bottles, with qualitative and quantitative analysis of the compounds present through the hyphenated technique gas chromatography / mass spectrometry. Results: there was a majority of decanal aldehyde in the fumes from the subcutaneous, muscle and liver tissues. Fumes of subcutaneous and muscular tissues also showed the presence of hexanal and phenol. In the fumes of subcutaneous and liver tissues we also found toluene and limonene and, finally, nonanal smoke was present in the muscle and liver tissues. Conclusion: there is increasing evidence showing that smoke from electrocautery used in subcutaneous, muscle and liver tissue is harmful to human health. Thus, there is need to reduce exposure to it or wear masks with filters capable of retaining these particles.


RESUMO Objetivo: analisar quimicamente os componentes da fumaça do eletrocautério, provenientes da coagulação de tecidos, muscular e hepático de suino. Métodos: coleta de fumaça produzida por eletrocauterização de tecido porcino em frascos previamente evacuados com análise qualitativa e quantitativa dos compostos presentes, através de técnica hifenada, cromatografia a gás/espectrometria de massas. Resultados: houve presença majoritária do aldeído decanal nas fumaças provenientes dos tecidos subcutâneo, muscular e hepático. Fumaças dos tecidos subcutâneo e muscular mostraram também a presença de hexanal e fenol. Nas fumaças dos tecidos subcutâneo e hepático foram encontrados ainda tolueno e limoneno e, por fim, nonanal estava presente nas fumaças dos tecidos muscular e hepático. Conclusão: há número crescente de evidências mostrando que fumaça proveniente de eletrocauterização de tecidos subcutâneo, muscular e hepático é nociva à saúde de seres humanos. Portanto, há necessidade de reduzir a exposição a ela ou usar máscara com filtro capaz de reter essas partículas.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To identify the composition of the smoke produced by electrocautery use during surgery. METHOD Integrative review with search for primary studies conducted in the databases of the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences, covering the studies published between 2004 and 2014. RESULTS The final sample consisted of 14 studies grouped into three categories, namely; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile compounds and volatile organic compounds. CONCLUSION There is scientific evidence that electrocautery smoke has volatile toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds, and its inhalation constitutes a potential chemical risk to the health of workers involved in surgeries.


Resumen OBJETIVO Identificar la composición del humo producido por el empleo del bisturí eléctrico durante el acto quirúrgico. MÉTODO Revisión integradora en la que la búsqueda de los estudios primarios fue llevada a cabo en las bases de datos US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature y Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud, abarcando estudios publicados entre 2004 y 2014. RESULTADOS La muestra estuvo compuesta de 14 estudios, agrupados en tres categorías: hidrocarburos policíclicos aromáticos, compuestos volátiles y compuestos orgánicos volátiles. CONCLUSIÓN Hay evidencias científicas de que el humo del bisturí eléctrico tiene compuestos volátiles tóxicos, cancerígenos y mutagénicos, y su inhalación se constituye en riesgos químicos potenciales a la salud de los trabajadores que están involucrados en el acto quirúrgico.


Resumo OBJETIVO Identificar a composição da fumaça produzida pelo uso do bisturi elétrico durante o ato cirúrgico. MÉTODO Revisão integrativa na qual a busca dos estudos primários foi realizada nas bases de dados US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature e Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, abrangendo estudos publicados entre 2004 e 2014. RESULTADOS A amostra final foi composta por 14 estudos, agrupados em três categorias, hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos, compostos voláteis e compostos orgânicos voláteis. CONCLUSÃO Há evidências científicas de que a fumaça do bisturi elétrico possui compostos voláteis tóxicos, cancerígenos e mutagênicos, e sua inalação constitui-se em riscos químicos potenciais à saúde dos trabalhadores que estão envolvidos no ato cirúrgico.

ABSTRACT

Health warnings on tobacco products have emerged as a prominent area of tobacco control policy. Regulatory practice has rapidly evolved over the past decade to the point where health warnings on tobacco products continue to set international precedents for their size and comprehensiveness. The current paper provides a general review of current regulatory practices, including physical design features (such as size and location), message content (pictorial vs. text and content "themes), and regulatory considerations such as rotation period and other novel practices.


Las advertencias sanitarias en los productos de tabaco han llegado a ser una de las políticas públicas principales para el control del tabaco. A través de la última década las prácticas regulatorias han evolucionado mucho y varios países siguen impulsado cambios regulatorios importantes en términos del tamaño y carácter de las advertencias sanitarias que han implementado. Este ensayo resume las prácticas regulatorias actuales alrededor del mundo, incluyendo las características del diseño físico de la advertencia (es decir, tamaño y ubicación), sus contenidos (temas, pictogramas, textos) y otros factores regulatorios importantes (frecuencia de rotación y otras prácticas innovadoras).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To provide a brief history of the illicit tobacco trade between Mexico and the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Research included a previously published study: "Cigarette taxes and smuggling: A statistical analysis and historical review", published by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy; US Customs and Border Protection data; various US court documents; General Accountability Office reporting; media reports; other historical material, and a personal interview. RESULTS: The research revealed that there is no credible evidence of organized criminal activity related to the illicit trade in tobacco products from Mexico into the United States. However, there is clear and convincing evidence of organized criminal activity in smuggling tobacco products from the United States into Mexico for at least 167 years. CONCLUSION: Historical records from 1845 into the 21st century clearly demonstrate that the United States was usually the source country for tobacco products moving illegally between the two countries.


OBJETIVO: Describir brevemente la historia del comercio ilícito de tabaco entre Estados Unidos y México. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: La investigación incluye publicaciones previas, como "Impuestos sobre los cigarrillos y el contrabando: Un análisis histórico y estadístico"; datos de la Agencia de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza; varios documentos de la Corte; los informes de la Oficina General de Rendición de Cuentas de EU; notas de prensa; materiales históricos, y una entrevista personal. RESULTADOS: La investigación reveló que no hay pruebas creíbles de actividad delictiva organizada relacionada con el comercio ilícito de productos de tabaco de México a EU. Sin embargo, hay pruebas claras y convincentes de que esta actividad se ha realizado de EU a México por lo menos durante 167 años. CONCLUSIÓN: Los registros históricos desde el año 1845 claramente demuestran que EU solía ser el país de origen del tabaco ilegal entre los dos países.

ABSTRACT

National and international environmental tobacco smoke studies were reviewed regarding its effects on passive smokers' health. Environmental tobacco smoke is composed by more than 4,000 known substances, which are different if they are in the mainstream or sidestream. Studies with biomarkers like cotinine have concluded that exposed nonsmokers have an increased cardiovascular morbi-mortality. Passive smokers also have an increased risk of lung, nasal sinus and breast cancer. Children have more acute and chronic respiratory symptoms, low respiratory infections, otitis and sudden infant death syndrome. Environmental tobacco smoke induces asthma and causes exacerbations in both children and adults. In reproductive health, it decreases the age of menopause and produces menstrual disorders. Newborn infants of passive smoking mothers have a higher probability of low birth weight and to be small for gestational age. This international scientific evidence should lead countries to take measures in order to protect nonsmokers' health.


Se realizó una revisión de los estudios nacionales e internacionales sobre los efectos del humo de tabaco ambiental en la salud de los fumadores pasivos. El humo de tabaco ambiental está conformado por más de 4.000 sustancias químicas, las que difieren cuali y cuantitativamente al estar presentes en la corriente principal o en la lateral. Los no fumadores expuestos presentan un aumento de morbi-mortalidad por enfermedad cardiovascular, incluso con estudios con biomarcadores como cotinina. Además los fumadores pasivos tienen un riesgo aumentado de presentar cáncer de pulmón, de senos paranasales y mama. En niños existe un mayor número de síntomas respiratorios agudos y crónicos, infecciones respiratorias bajas, otitis media y síndrome de muerte súbita infantil. El humo de tabaco ambiental favorece la inducción y exacerbación de asma bronquial en niños y adultos. En la salud reproductiva, disminuye la edad de aparición de la menopausia y produce desórdenes menstruales. Los recién nacidos hijos de madres fumadoras pasivas tienen mayor probabilidad de nacer con bajo peso o de ser pequeños para la edad gestacional. La evidencia científica internacional debe contribuir a que los países tomen medidas para proteger la salud de los no fumadores.

ABSTRACT

Under conditions with a high concentration level of laser smoke particles, the filtration efficiency of the Ramathibodi nasal filter was studied. Different kinds of filter material in the Ramathibodi nasal filter were evaluated in human adults with an anterior standard rhinomanometric method. The Ramathibodi nasal filter with three-layers of a half-face mask filter and a 4 mm thickness polyurethane foam put inside was applied in a simulated human airway. The experiment was conducted in the Otolaryngology Department, Ramathibodi Hospital from October to December 2001. The amount and size of laser smoke particles were measured by a laser diode portable dust monitor. The amount of residual laser smoke particles in the simulated human airway without the Ramathibodi nasal filter of PM2.5, PM10 and PM15 were 100.91 +/- 7.65, 109.10 +/- 7.87 and 120.18 +/- 14.28 mcg/m3 respectively. The amount of residual laser smoke particles in the simulated human airway with the Ramathibodi nasal filter of PM2.5, PM10 and PM15 were 85.55 +/- 3.42, 92.18 +/- 4.40 and 99.72 +/- 5.02 mcg/m3 respectively. The filtration efficacy of the Ramathibodi nasal filter showed a high statistically significant difference with a p-value of <0.001 for three particle sizes. High concentration of laser smoke particles in an operative room represented suspended particulate matters which are very dangerous for human healths. The Ramathibodi nasal filter as a personal respiratory protective device applied in human nasal vestibules could protect the human airway from atmospheric suspended particulate matter.

ABSTRACT

Suspended particulate matter in an office and laser smoke particles in a laser operative room of the Otolaryngology Department, Ramathibodi Hospital were compared. Suspended particulate matter sizes of PM15, PM10 and PM2.5 were selected due to their impact on health. The amount and sizes of the particles were measured by a laser diode portable dust monitor. The mean and standard deviation were measured every hour for 6 periods and calculated by specific computer software. The amount of suspended particulate matters in the office were within the accepted safety level. The amount of suspended particulate matter including laser smoke particles in the operative room before, during and after each laser evaporative procedure was much higher than that of the office. The amount of suspended particulate matter was dangerous for all personnel in the operative room. Risk management for patients in the operative room should be stressed. The ventilation system of the operative room will be assessed further.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar possíveis alteraçöes na fraçäo lipídica de filés de anchova sem pele durante a defumaçäo líquida, bem como em diferentes condiçöes de armazenamento do produto final. Para a anchova in natura utilizada como matéria-prima, e para o produto defumado obteve-se os seguintes resultados de composiçäo química: 69,38 por cento e 59,79 por cento de umidade; 1,09 por cento e 2,45 por cento de cinzas; 16,80 por cento e 22,30 por cento de proteínas; 12,43 e 15,21 por cento de gordura, respectivamente. Como parâmetro de oxidaçäo lipídica para a anchova in natura, obteve-se os seguites resultados de númeero de TBA e índice de peróxidos: 0,04 mg MA/Kg músculo e 6,76 meq. peróxidos/Kg gordura; e para a anchova defumada: 0,06mg MA/Kg de músculo e 8,84 meq. peróxidos/Kg de gordura. Com relaçäo às amostras armazenadas sob congelamento (-21,64§C), observou-se que o processo de oxidaçäo lipídica näo foi pronunciada durante os 60 dias de armazenamento. Já nas amostras armazenadas sob refrigeraçäo (5,74§C) houve uma tendência de oxidaçäo lipídica caracterizada pelo aumento do número de TBA. As amostras armazenadas à temperatura ambiente (18,71§C) apresentaram a partir da primeira semana um aumento do número de TBA e índice de peróxidos, evidenciando o processo de oxidaçäo lipídica. Entretanto, a partir da quarta semana (28 dias) esta oxidaçäo lipídica perdeu seu valor e uma deterioraçäo microbiológica tornou-se mais evidente (odor pútrido)

ABSTRACT

Las condiciones en que se realiza la combustión del tabaco durante el acto de fumar favorecen el arrastre de diferentes componentes del cigarrillo, incluyéndose los que se generan en la ignición y que llegan al aparato respiratorio del sujeto que aspira el humo del tabaco. En el extremo de la combustión del cagarrillo la temperatura alcanza 600ºC pero en el punto opuesto, que se pone en contacto con los labios del fumador, la temperatura es menor; por lo anterior se considera que en el cigarrillo se forma un gradiente de temperatura que puede ser capaz de transportar los productos del tabaco. Para demostrar que sí es posible encontrar componentes inmunorreactivos en el humo del tabaco se diseñó un modelo en el cual se usaron dos series de cigarrillos. La serie experimental de cigarrillos fue inyectada con distintas concentraciones de una solución de albúmina sérica bovina (albúmina sérica bovina) y la control recibió salina-fosfato (SSF) sin ninguna proteína. Ambos grupos de cigarrillos permanecieron a 20ºC durante 48 horas para permitir su secado. Posteriormente, se procedió a la combustión de cada serie por separado y el condensado del humo del tabaco producido se dejó en solución salina-fosfato. Los condensados de humo del tabaco derivados de los cigarrillos con mayor concentración de albúmina sérica bovina presentaron más proteína total que los cigarrillos controles. La identificación de la albúmina sérica bovina, que previamente se había colocado en los cigarrillos, se realizó con técnicas inmunoserológicas en las cuales se demostró una banda correspondiente a la albumina sérica bovina, la cual fue revelada con los anticuerpos policlonales anti-albúmina sérica bovina. Los condensados de humo del tabaco producidos con cigarrillos sin albúmina sérica bovina no reaccionaron con los anticuerpos anti-albúmina sérica bovina. La cuantificación de la albvúmina sérica bovina en cada conjunto de cigarrillos mostró de 15 a 601 mcg por cada cigarrillo, de acuerdo con la dosis de albúmina sérica bovina aplicada inicialmente. Se concluye que una fracción de la proteína puesta a los cigarrillos conserva su inmunorreactividad en el condensado del humo del tabaco; por lo cual es posible que los sujetos fumadores al aspirar el humo se pongan en contacto con estructuras del tabaco que desencadenan una respuesta inmunitaria anti-tabaco

ABSTRACT

Levels of steam-volatile phenol, hydrogen cyanide and benzo(a)pyrene in various types of tobacco smoking products marketed in the country have been determined for the first time. Steam-volatile phenol levels in six popular brands of Indian cigarettes varied from 118 to 226 micrograms, and in six popular brands of bidis, from 129 to 273 micrograms. Cheroot and cigarillos yielded 400 micrograms and 333 micrograms steam-volatile phenol respectively. The hydrogen cyanide levels in the mainstream smoke of five popular brands of Indian cigarettes varied from 366 to 638 micrograms and in the mainstream smoke of four popular brands of bidis from 688 to 904 micrograms. Cheroot and cigarillos yielded 588 micrograms and 1119 micrograms hydrogen cyanide respectively. The values of benzo(a)pyrene content in Indian cigarettes varied from 85 to 114 ng and in bidis from 108 to 144 ng. Herbal bidi and cheroot had 1315 ng and 2519 ng benzo(a)pyrene respectively. Cigarettes were smoked as per international standard smoking conditions and the levels of noxious agent were found to be higher than in currently marketed western cigarettes. However, these levels in all the indigenous products including bidis cannot be directly compared with those of cigarettes as they were smoked under modified conditions.
